We believe our students have a responsibility to understand and engage with complex environmental issues.
The Green Buckley Initiative
Through our Green Buckley initiative, which includes classroom experiences, student climate action teams, and school wide sustainability efforts, students learn the skills of planetary stewardship and how to advocate for environmental justice and change.
Green Buckley Programs
Several programs and classes during the school day promote students connection to the natural world:
- Advanced Climate Change: Human-induced climate change is the largest threat to the natural environment the world has ever experienced. Through experiential learning, research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and active lectures, students review and rethink humanity's relationship with earth. All students of this class participate in Buckley's annual Climate Conference, in either a behind-the-scenes role or as a presenter.
- Advanced Studies in Literature: the Rhetoric of Climate Change: In this Upper School science class, students dig into the data and research behind the science of climate change.
- Annual Palm Springs field trip: Each year a group of Upper School students travel to the desert to study the natural environment through art, architecture, conservation, and sustainability. [LINK to Trips and Travel page]
- Lower School Nature Trail education: Every grade K-5 hikes the Nature Trail on our campus once a month to spend time in nature and in our outdoor classroom.
تیم اقدام اقلیمی
This student club promotes environmental activism on campus and beyond through consciousness-raising and events such as the Pop-Up Thrift Shop and the Reusable Water Bottle Initiative. They also plan and lead Buckley’s Annual Climate Conference. Members of CAT were the first students to present during L.A. Climate Week and were the founding members of the L.A. area Climate Coalition Group, formed with other students trying to bring sustainability to their campuses.
Buckley’s Green Transportation Program
Every Buckley student must be enrolled in either a carpool or bus route. This reduces our carbon footprint and our overall impact on our neighborhood and canyon. Our Transportation Office assists families in finding others near them to join a carpool. For bus routes and other details visit the Our Campus page.
